আমার মা – বাবাও দাদার অতীত নিয়ে নীরব থাকতেন । তবে কোনাে আত্মীয়স্বজন বেড়াতে এলে টেবিলে দীর্ঘ আলােচনা এবং গল্পগুজব চলত । আর তাদের আলােচনার কিছু কিছু অংশ আমার কানেও আসত । তবে আমার মা – বাবা আমাকে কিছুই বলতেন না । বিশেষ করে আমার বাবা । বাবা চুপচাপ একজন মানুষ ছিলেন ।
প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধ চলাকালীন সময়ে আমার বাবার জন্ম হয় । বাবার জন্ম সেইন্ট পিটারসবার্গে । ১৯১১ সালে । শহরে জীবন তখন অনেক কষ্টের ছিল । লােকজন দুর্ভিক্ষের মাঝে জীবনযাপন করছিল । তাই আমাদের পুরাে পরিবারই তেভিয়ের অঞ্চলে , আমার দাদির গ্রাম , পমিনােভােতে পাড়ি জমায় । আমার দাদির বাড়িটা এখনও আছে ।
এমনকি আমার পরিবারের সদস্যরা এখনও অবকাশযাপনের জন্য সেখানে যাই । পমিনােভােতেই আমার বাবা প্রথমবারের মতাে আমার মাকে দেখেন । যখন তারা বিয়ে করেন , তাদের উভয়ের বয়সই ছিল তখন মাত্র ১৭ বছর । কেন ? তারা কি কোনাে বিশেষ কারণে বিয়ে করেছিলেন ? মােটেই না ।
বিয়ে করার জন্য কি কোনাে কারণের দরকার হয় ? তারা একে অপরকে ভালােবাসতেন । আর আমার বাবা তখন সেনাবাহিনীতে যােগদানের কথা ভাবছিলেন । হয়তাে নিজেদের স্বস্তির কথা ভেবেই তারা বিয়ে করেছিলেন … আমি সঠিক বলতে পারব না ।
